Getting Familiar With Pictou County
Visiting Trenton Park was an idea that came from a brochure I was reading at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. Now that I’m living in New Glasgow, I’m trying to familiarize myself with all the local attractions. Trenton Park seemed like a good option, as it would get me outdoors and also give me a little bit of exercise. Residents and coworkers also mentioned it as a place I should visit. Just after 9am I threw my backpack in the Jeep and headed on my way.
Impressive Start
I was impressed right off the bat, as one of the first things I saw when I pulled in the parking lot was modern bicycle parking. I then came across a building that had washrooms, an office, and what looked to be an ice cream shop (this place had won me over already!). I then headed over to the sitemap where I was blown away at all the amenities Trenton Park provides to it’s residents. It really has something for everyone.
Splash Pad And Pool
Once i got into Trenton Park, one of the first areas I came across was the Splash Pad. I didn’t bring my bathing suit, so I wasn’t going to push the button just to waste water, but I could only imagine the fun that goes on there with young families! I also noticed they had an AED located near the Splash Pad area. Next to the Splash Pad was the Outdoor Pool, which wasn’t open at that time. The pool looked clean, well cared for, and very inviting for someone looking to cool off on a hot day.
Playground For Kids....And Maybe The Odd Adult
Next I came across a Playground that some kids would only dream about playing in. I don’t know all the terms for the equipment, but there were swings, small things you could climb on, big things you could climb on, small slides for small children, big slides for big children (and perhaps the odd parent), a flower sandbox, the list goes on. No shortage of fun for the family in this area!
Trail Leading To Dog Park
I arrived around 9:30 AM the morning after the first night of the New Glasgow Riverfront Jubilee. Coincidently, Trenton park was nearly empty! I was walking on a trail that no one else was on at the time. I came across a large clearing with a fence bordering it. It ended up being a very good sized Dog Park. A place I would have loved to bring my dog, but at the time of writing she’s 17 years old and no longer capable of walking long distances.
Pond And Dock
Further down the same trail, I came across a beautiful Pond, where I could see ducks paddling their way around. The trail bordered the entire Pond, which gives a person a chance to get some exercise while taking some nice scenery. I then spotted a nice little Dock where a duck seemed to be looking for some handouts!
Theatre And Naval Gun
I saw there was a large structure coming up in the direction I was walking, so I decided to check it out. It ended up being a very nice outdoor theatre with lots of seating. I could see myself catching a show or an artist there sometime in the future. I then came across a big piece of machinery/equipment which turned out to be a “MK XIX 4 Inch” Naval Gun. A pretty neat looking piece that came from the Birthplace of Steel!
Trenton Park - A Place I'd Visit Again
My first trip to Trenton Park was complete. There were many trails I wasn’t able to get to, and there may also have been more amenities that the park provides which I didn’t include. What I will say is that there’s something for pretty much everyone. There’s plenty of benches for the elderly, there’s hiking and biking trails for those who are active, and pools and playgrounds for young families. I hope you enjoyed my post. Check out White Point Beach Resort Walking Tour if you’re looking for another one of my tours.
