Lighthouse Beach - A Destination Of Curiosity

Travelling in boats through Pictou Harbour growing up, I was always curious about the “Lighthouse Beach”. It’s a peninsula starting from Pictou Landing that leads right out to the middle of the Pictou Harbour. It’s been a goal of mine since I was young to visit this beach. As of August 2024, Google still has it listed as an Island, which is Incorrect! I had a bit of hard time finding the Lighthouse Beach by land, as my first attempt landed me at the Pictou Landing Harbour Authority. From there, I went to the first gas station I came across in Pictou Landing. The kind people there directed me to go straight down Beach Road. That I did, and the destination was finally found!

Lighthouse Beach Grass

White Sand Beach In Nova Scotia - With Grass

As I got on to the beach, I dipped my feet into the water. The air temperature was probably mid 20’s Celsius, and the water temperature didn’t seem far from that. The water would be even warmer on the land side of the peninsula. This beach is a simple one. It goes sandbar, sand, rock, grass, rock, sand, sandbar on the other side. It’s not  a wide peninsula and gives me a Sable Island like vibe. I didn’t come across much litter, the beach was relatively clean. There were a lot of shells washed up on the beach, but not so much sea glass.

Pictou Bar Lighthouse

One Person - No Lighthouse At Lighthouse Beach

As I made my way towards the end of the beach I crossed one person on my path. We were both mentioning how gorgeous of a day it was. The person also said they rarely come across others while roaming on this beach. It appears this place is a true Pictou County hidden gem! I could see a tower with a solar panel and perhaps a light attached to it in the distance. Once I got closer I could see the foundation of the old Pictou Bar Lighthouse which tragically burnt to the ground on the evening of July 5th, 2004. I kind of wish they would rebuild the lighthouse myself. If you’re a local, what do you think?

Lighthouse Beach Picnic Table

Boats, Beach, Birds, And...A Picnic Table?

As I made my way to the other side of the peninsula I watched a sailboat and a powerboat pass by in the Pictou Harbour. There were also plenty of seagulls flying around in the area, which tends to be a common theme for the beaches in Pictou County! The sand was gorgeous at the point. Off in the distance, I could see some type of low level wooden structure. As I got closer there was no question what it was. It was none other then a picnic table out in the middle of nowhere. So for future reference, if you ever plan a day drip to Lighthouse Beach, make sure you pack a lunch!

Pictou Landing

Good View From The Land

One the way back I had to watch my step a bit, as the terrain was a little  slippery in areas. The waves were so calm on that morning which made the walk that much more enjoyable. The side going back was facing the land, and all I could think about is those who have such a nice view of the beach on a daily basis. It would surely be nice to see a photo of the beach from their prospective. As my tour was coming to an end I noticed my camera lens cover was starting to get a salty layer. I took a couple more shots and headed back to the parking lot.
