It was a Gorgeous Afternoon for a Paddle
It was 30 degrees celsius and I had just gone for a swim. I looked over and the saw the kayak’s on the rack. I thought to myself there’s no better time than now for a nice relaxing paddle down the Toney River! I gathered my things: water, apples, life jacket, camera, sunscreen and headed on my way!
Under the Sunrise Trail Tunnel into the Toney River
The child in you seems to always come out when paddle through the Sunrise Trail tunnel into the entrance of the Toney River. On one side of the tunnel there’s a commercial fishing harbor, and on the other there’s peace, tranquility, and stunning scenery. I often raise my voice in the tunnel just so I can hear an echo!

Just you and Nature
There had been a lot of people around the weekend before so I felt like I needed a place to get away. Once you get out of sight of the tunnel it’s just you and nature. Sometimes you can hear the traffic from the Sunrise Trail, but it’s all just an afterthought once you turn the first corner. When you get far enough down the Toney River Trees, blue sky, and wildlife are what dominate the landscape. See video at the top of the page.
Birds and Bugs
It was a pretty quiet day on the river. I noticed a few bugs around, but they weren’t really irritating me. They were just kind of buzzing around hovering over the waterline. I did notice a couple of Bald Eagles on my voyage, but couldn’t get my camera out in time to get a good shot. That’s always the way, isn’t it? I’ve seen Eagle Nests in the past, and I’ve also seen the occasional owl from time to time.
Time to Turn Around and Head Back With the Tide
It was coming on 6pm and the tide was starting to go back out so I figured it was a good time to turn around and head back to the Strait. I came a across a couple of really nice homes that overlook the river (which you can see in the video above), and was thinking to myself how jealous I was of them. I made my way back through the tunnel, the harbor, and safely made it home through the strait.
If you Ever get a Chance...
If you’re a kayaker and you’re looking for a peaceful place to paddle, I recommended heading to Toney River, Nova Scotia if you haven’t done so already. They have a nice little boat launch for easy access. Also, if you fish apparently there is Sea-Run Brook Trout around in the spring. For more good scenery in the area please check out Toney River Nova Scotia Sunset. Thank you for reading my post!
