A Cloudy Start
As I set out for my Northumberland Strait kayaking adventure the sky was cloudy, which was not ideal. However, the sky alone does not determine a good kayaking adventure. When seas are calm, which they were on that night, you’re pretty much guaranteed an enjoyable paddle! I set out on my way just past Mackinnons Point setting my sights towards Upalong Beach, Pictou County.
Obeserving Differences in Coastal Banks
As I got further into my Northumberland Strait kayaking adventure, I could notice the well protected banks, in particular along Upalong beach. Strong north winds, tropical storms, and hurricanes often pound the Nova Scotia shores of the Northumberland Strait. The strongest storms seem to come in late summer and early fall. As we get a little down the coast we can start to see the rath mother nature takes on the banks that are not protected from coastal erosion.
Geese and Sun!
As I start to approach the turning point of my Northumberland Strait kayaking adventure, I start to notice some movement in my peripheral vision along the shore. I looked over and it was none other than a group of Geese (? I’m terrible with birds Contact me if I’m wrong) walking their way down the shore! I paddled a bit more, and all of a sudden another group of Geese (?) passed me overhead, and showed me the sky was starting to clear and the sun was coming out. Things happen for a reason I guess!
Sun Shower Followed by a Rainbow
On my way back it started to rain as I approached Upalong Beach. You could tell it was something that was going to be short lived, as there was only one small dark cloud surrounded by an abundance of blue sky. As I got closer to Mackinnons Point I couldn’t help but notice the massive rainbow taking control of the sky. Rainbow’s are odd events in their own right, and even more odd to see while in a kayak!
Sunset off the Point
My Northumberland Strait kayaking adventure was coming to close. I decided to camp out in the calm ocean where I could have a stunning view of both Mackinnons Point and the oncoming sunset. My plan was to get footage of the sunset from start to finish, but my camera battery had other ideas as it was down to 5%. Even though I wasn’t able to capture the full sunset, I was able to witness a rainbow, some Geese (?), and lots of beautiful scenery. For that reason the evening was chalked up as a success.
